
In 1996, Carter Brey was appointed Principal Cellist of the New York Philharmonic and made his official debut with the orchestra in 1997, performing Tchaikovsky's Rococo Variations under Kurt Mazur. In addition to this demanding position, he continues his career as soloist and chamber musician. As one of the outstanding instrumentalists of his generation, he is the winner of such prestigious awards as the Piatigorsky Memorial Prize, an Avery Fisher Career Grant, a Young Concert Artists Award, and the top honor in the first Rostropovich International Cello Competition. Mr. Brey's orchestral appearances include performances with Mstislav Rostropovich, Claudio Abbado, Cristoph von Dohnanyi, and Kurt Mazur. He performs as guest artist with the Emerson and Tokyo string quartets and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. He presents a series of duo recitals with pianist Christopher O'Riley.
